Going Nuclear,
as a work of popular history, is neither pro nor anti- nuclear. The
Introduction outlines a core principle of this work, that adopting extremist
and fundamentalist positions in any argument ultimately leads nowhere:
“Understanding the origins of our particular prejudices, acknowledging
and appreciating those origins in the context of their own time
and place in history, is essential to making informed and intelligent
decisions about the future.”
The role of nuclear power in the armoury of technologies that can be used to halt any further disastrous growth in global warming has once again become the subject of intense debate in Ireland as elsewhere. As it was in the 1970s and ‘80s, this new debate is adversarial and characterized by an Orwellian ‘four legs good, two legs bad’ approach to the various energy technologies by many commentators. But as the impacts of climate change become more apparent, a vigorous debate on how we can best meet the challenges we face is essential and it must reach beyond the respective political agendas of pro or anti-nuclear lobbyists. Join the debate on this site by contributing your views on the book itself and the issues that it raises. Barring the usual caveats on abuse or libelous comments, all contributions are welcome.
